INTRODUCTION

This chapter deal with background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, significance of the study, research question, scope and delimitation of the study and operational definition of terms.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Birth preparedness and complication readiness is the process of planning for normal delivery and anticipating the action needed in case of an emergency Adesokan, (2014). This implies that the concept of birth preparedness and complication readiness is regarded towards achieving safe motherhood through complete or holistic care. Birth preparedness and complication readiness is a comprehensive strategy to improve the use of skilled provider at birth and the key intervention to decrease maternal mortality. Birth preparedness and complication readiness strategy encourage women to be informed of danger sign of obstetric complication and emergencies, choose a preferred birth place and attendant at birth, make advance arrangement with the attending at birth arrange for transport to skilled care site in case of emergencies, saving or arranging alternative funds for cost of skilled and emergency care, finding a companion to be with the women at birth identify blood donor in order to facilitate sruift decision making and reduce delay in reaching care once a problem arises World Health Organization (2014).
